About Us

Who We Are

Expert solutions in Radiation Safety, Lab Analysis, Calibration, and Radon Measurement

RSSI was founded in 1975 by two Certified Health Physicists (CHP’s), Herman Cember and Eli Port, and rapidly became a national leader in radiation safety consulting, radiological health, and regulatory affairs.

Clients and regulatory agencies recognize our licensing and Sealed Source and Device Registration (SSRD) applications as innovative and effective. RSSI’s laboratory, calibration, and radon services are ISO accredited and NIST traceable.

RSSI’s laboratory services meet the requirements of all agencies using data we supply.

RSSI’s calibration range is a Secondary Standard for exposure rate measurements. Our calibration services are used by the regulated community and regulatory agencies.

RSSI alpha track radon detectors exceed all performance standards for alpha track devices and are NELAP accredited. RSSI’s detectors are the most sensitive radon tests available.

Who's Behind The RSSI Legacy

Herman Cember

Herman Cember (1924-2009) began the first graduate health physics program not supported by the federal government at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. He moved to the University of Cincinnati a decade later, and then joined the faculty of Northwestern University, where he served for three decades teaching and directing the Health Physics graduate program. His final academic position was at Purdue.

He authored Introduction to Health Physics, the all-time best-selling textbook in Health Physics. This book is still used throughout the world and by almost every health physicist within the United States as a course text, for preparation for the CHP exams, or as a reference and resource.

He was honored with the highest award for scientific contributions, the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award of the Health Physics Society, and the William B. McAdams Award of the American Academy of Health Physics for his contributions to the examination process, continuing education programs, and as president of the American Academy of Health Physics.

Eli Port

Eli Port is certified by the American Board of Health Physics and is a registered Professional Engineer in Safety Engineering. He has over fifty years of experience in health physics including safety evaluation of the world’s largest production accelerator, assessment of environmental radiation doses at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), dose reduction in public, industrial, institutional, and academic settings, and mitigation of environmental radiological impacts.

Mr. Port has over thirty years combined experience as a professor at Northwestern University and at the Illinois Institute of Technology where he started and co-directed a Professional Masters program in Health Physics. He has designed short courses for clients in licensing, compliance, public and worker dose reduction, internal and external dosimetry, DOT regulations, applied radiation safety, and public awareness. Mr. Port is a past president of the Midwest Chapter of the Health Physics Society.
